Reviews of the Best Online Mahjong Sites 2024

It’s not just the quantity of mahjong casino sites in Malaysia which is high, but the quality too. Whichever one of our recommended brands you go with, in fact, you’ll encounter a safe, modern, and – likely – enjoyable experience. Here’s why we particularly liked our top five brands of all.

1. 12Play – Your #1 Destination for Mahjong Online in Malaysia

12play mahjong

As we’ve already made clear, the competition level when it comes to online mahjong sites in Malaysia is extremely high. It shows just how highly we think of 12Play, therefore, that we were actually quite comfortable in making it our top choice.

This is simply a well-rounded Malaysian casino. It covers all the major bases you could hope for, and – in this case – we’re particularly pleased to say that those include mahjong.

As on most Malaysian casinos, you won’t actually be able to play live mahjong here. You can, however, enjoy one of the best selections of mahjong slots around. These come courtesy of four different developers: CQ9, DT Asia, Play n Go, and Simple Play. The specific titles (in that order) are Mahjong Fruit, Mahjong King, Mahjong 88, and Saint of Mahjong.

In general, 12Play’s collection of casino games is outstanding. Appropriately, 12 of the biggest developers around have combined to ensure this is the case, including Pragmatic Play, Evolution Gaming, and Asia Gaming. In addition to the aforementioned mahjong games, this mighty selection includes hundreds of other slots, plus table games, lotteries, arcade games, and more.

12Play’s special offers also help you to gain plenty of value as you do play mahjong. These start off with an extremely generous welcome offer, which you can use to gain up to a MYR 588 bonus. After that you’ll find plenty of useful ongoing promotions, including multiple reload bonuses and cashback offers. Add in the likes of live chat support, mobile apps, and a nice VIP program, and you can easily see how 12Play took our top spot.

Welcome Offer 100% Deposit Match Bonus, Up to MYR 588
Wagering Requirement 25x
Minimum Deposit MYR 100
Maximum Withdrawal N/A
Payment Methods EeziePay, Help2Pay, PayTrust

Pros

  • Excellent casino gaming selection
  • Gain value as you play mahjong via excellent special offers
  • Solid mobile apps
  • Nice VIP program

Cons

  • Relative lack of payment options

2. BK8 – Extremely Malaysia-Friendly Mahjong Casino

bk8 mahjong

BK8 first launched in 2015, and – while it has expanded further afield – its focus has long been on the Southeast Asian market. Malaysians specifically have always been some of its most important customers, and this continues to be the case. This is shown by the provision of a full Malaysian version of the site, including Malay language support and the acceptance of MYR directly.

Aside from that, BK8 happens to be a fantastic online casino in general. Its gaming selection is vast, with 13 of the biggest developers around having helped to make this the case. While there are no live mahjong games here, nor RNG-based ones, you do have a great selection of excellent mahjong-themed slots to choose from. These include:

  • Mahjong Fruit (CQ9)
  • Mahjong Panda (Pragmatic Play)
  • Mahjong Warrior (HC Slot)
  • Fortune Mahjong, Rich Mahjong, and Rich Mahjong 2 (YesGetRich)
  • Golden Mahjong  (Funky Games)
  • Mahjong Slots (Asia Gaming)

In addition to all of those mahjong slots, you’ll also have plenty of other options should you fancy a change of pace. These include plenty of both live dealer and computer-run table games, fishing games, and more.

Like 12Play, BK8 does a great job of rewarding you. The welcome bonus isn’t quite as good, but the ongoing promotions definitely pick up the slack. These include a reload, weekly rescue, and winning streak bonuses, plus an excellent cash rebate offer.

Elsewhere, all of the aforementioned features are housed within one of the most user-friendly sites around. This usability also extends to the excellent mobile apps, and – should you encounter any issues – helpful support won’t be far away.

Welcome Offer 50% Deposit Match Welcome Bonus, Up to MYR 300
Wagering Requirement 25x
Minimum Deposit MYR 50
Maximum Withdrawal N/A
Payment Methods Debit Card, GrabPay, Cryptos

Pros

  • Full Malaysia-focused version of the casino available
  • Very good mobile apps
  • Excellent ongoing promotions
  • Solid track record

Cons

  • Not the best welcome offer around

3. Lucky Block – The Best Crypto-Only Casino in Malaysia for Mahjong

lucky block mahjong

The rise of cryptocurrencies over the past decade or so has been extremely rapid. They’ve gone from being a simple curiosity, to an enormously popular payment option. Online betting brands have happily gotten involved. We’ve seen both regular casinos accepting cryptos far more often, and even the development of cryptocurrency-focused online casinos

Lucky Block is definitely one of the best examples of the latter. This is actually a cryptocurrency-only casino, with no traditional payment options. If you don’t have any crypto yet, don’t worry – you can actually buy a nice selection of them directly through the platform, including the Lucky Block altcoin.

If you do choose Lucky Block to play mahjong online in Malaysia, you’ll get two main benefits. The first is simply joining up with one of the most ambitious and exciting young casinos around. The second is getting access to perhaps the very biggest welcome bonus in Malaysia right now. This will not only match your first deposit 200%, but do so up to a mighty maximum figure of 10,000 euros. There might be a lack of ongoing promotions here, but we’d say Lucky Block’s welcome offer is easily good enough to make up for this.

At the time of writing, Lucky Block only has one mahjong game in place. This is Mahjong 88, which is an excellent slot from veteran develoeprs Play n Go, with a sizable 8×8 grid and an exciting wild feature. We hope to see Lucky Block expand its mahjong selection in the future.

Welcome Offer 200% Match Deposit Bonus, Up to 10,000 EUR, Plus 50 Free Spins
Wagering Requirement 6x per installment
Minimum Deposit 20 EUR
Maximum Withdrawal N/A
Payment Methods Bitcoin, litecoin, ethereum

Pros

  • Enormous welcome offer
  • Great range of crypto payment options
  • Exciting, up-and-coming Mahjong betting site
  • Strong Android betting app

Cons

  • Lack of traditional payment methods will alienate some punters

4. 1xBet – Massive Mahjong Betting Site With a Strong Track Record

mahjong 1xbet

1xBet is easily the oldest brand on this list, with a track record stretching back to 2007. Within this time it has done an incredible job of attracting punters from all around the world, with Malaysia being just one of the many markets it serves. Still, it does have an entire version of its platform specifically for Malaysian punters, and accepts MYR directly.

The gaming selection on 1xBet has been constantly improved over the years, and nowadays is easily one of the best around. While there are no live mahjong games available, 1xBet actually has the widest selection of mahjong slots of any major Malaysian casino, including the Mahjong JinPai demo slot. There are a hefty nine different titles at the time of writing, including games you won’t find on any of our other recommended sites. Here’s your full list of options:

  • Golden Mahjong
  • Mahjong JinPai slot
  • Lucky Mahjong slot
  • Quick Play Mahjong
  • Mahjong King
  • Mahong Masters
  • Saint of Mahjong
  • Mahjong Star
  • Mahjong88

If you should ever want to switch things up, you’ll basically find an endless supply of online video slots and other table games to pick between.

1xBet also definitely has one of the best collections of special offers around. Following on from an excellent welcome offer, these cover all the major bases. You’ll find cashback deals, reload bonuses, free spins offers, winnings boosts, a high quality VIP program, and even more in place here.

The fun doesn’t end there. 1xBet also has a vast array of payment options, excellent customer service, top-notch mobile apps, and extremely strong security features.

Welcome Offer 100% Deposit Match Welcome Bonus, Up to 300 EUR
Wagering Requirement 35x
Minimum Deposit 10 EUR
Maximum Withdrawal N/A
Payment Methods Debit card, bank transfer, cryptos, eWallets

Pros

  • Nice selection of mahjong games
  • Brilliant range of special offers
  • Enormous choice of mahjong alternatives
  • Plenty of payment options to pick from

Cons

  • User interface is starting to look outdated

5. EU9 – Fantastic Range of Ongoing Promotions for Mahjong Players

eubet mahjong

Rounding out our list of your five top destinations for mahjong online in Malaysia, we have EU9. This is another extremely diverse betting site, which – like BK8 – has a strong focus on Southeast Asia. While technically you can’t view the casino in Malay here, there’s still a Malaysia-specific site, and you can use MYR directly for your mahjong gaming.

The mighty gaming selection is the creation of an impressive 15 different developers. At the time of writing, this included three different Mahjong slots: Mahjong Ways, Mahjong Ways 2, and Saint of Mahjong. There aren’t currently any live mahjong titles, however.

The enormous selection means EU9 can be your casino of choice not only for mahjong, but for basically any other game you enjoy playing too, including slots, fishing games, table games, lotteries, and more. All of this is also housed within a modern, smooth, and user-friendly platform. Those adjectives also apply to the mobile apps, which are available for both Android and iOS devices.

Like most of the other brands on this list, EU9 also rewards its customers in plenty of useful ways. The welcome offer is solid, if unspectacular. The ongoing promotions, however, are high in both quantity and quality. These include everything from reload bonuses, to cashback deals, to an excellent referral scheme. You even get rewards for simply ‘checking in’ each day here, which is particularly generous.

Welcome Offer 50% Deposit Match Welcome Bonus, Up to MYR 299
Wagering Requirement 25x
Minimum Deposit MYR 30
Maximum Withdrawal N/A
Payment Methods Bank transfer

Pros

  • Plenty of good special offers for Mahjong bettors
  • Games from 15 different developers in place
  • Extremely user-friendly platform
  • Very good apps for on-the-go mahjong

Cons

  • Bigger welcome offers available elsewhere

How the Game of Mahjong Works

We’ve already told you the 10 best mahjong casino brands you can currently play with in Malaysia. Now though, it’s time to zoom out and get a wider overview of what mahjong actually is. If you’re completely new to the game, consider this your beginner’s introduction.

For starters, mahjong is a game with a long track record. It is based on card games that were originally popular in 17th century China, but the modern-day, tile-based version of mahjong was (most likely) invented in the 1870s. Since then, its popularity has spread all around Asia, including to Malaysia.

If you’ve seen pictures of mahjong, or people playing it in real life, you might think it looks intimidating. That may well be the case, but we’re pleased to say that the actual rules are pretty straightforward. This is basically just a ‘trick-taking’ game, similar to games like rummy. You’re initially dealt 13 tiles (out of 144 in total), and keep discarding and gaining tiles until you form a ‘hand’. There are plenty of hands you can form (meaning it’s not that hard to actually do), and we’d recommend checking out a full breakdown of the possible hands before you start playing.

How to Play Mahjong Online in Malaysia

As with most games which have been popular for a while, there are plenty of different variants for mahjong out there. These will all follow the basic tile-based, trick-taking format, although some will use slightly different tilesets. That being said, when it comes to mahjong online in Malaysia, you’ll usually be playing the classic, basic version.

Here’s a super-quick guide on how to play a mahjong game online:

  • Pick a casino, then create and fund your account (see below)
  • Load up a mahjong game
  • The dice will be rolled to see who starts as the dealer
  • The tiles will be shuffled, and 13 will be dealt to each player
  • In turn, players begin picking up face-down tiles. When it’s your turn, you either keep it and discard one of your other tiles, or throw it back
  • If you wish, you can pick up tiles that other players have discarded, and swap them with your own
  • Try to build ‘melds’, which are just groups of three or four of the same tile
  • Ultimately, try to make a mahjong, which will consist of four melds and one pair
  • Each player can now score their hand, and whoever gets the most points wins the round

Obviously, you should feel free to try the real-life version. It’s simply a fact, however, that playing mahjong online in Malaysia is much quicker. On an online casino, all the time-consuming business of shuffling tiles, adding up points, and so on, will be handled for you automatically.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, here’s some more in-depth info about playing mahjong online.

Playing Mahjong For Real Money

We’ll discuss the benefits of playing mahjong for free shortly. While we certainly recommend trying this, however, our main focus here is definitely helping you to make money from your mahjong gaming.

You won’t usually be using ‘odds’ here, as you would in sports betting, nor will you simply have an RTP as you would in video slots. Instead, you’ll usually be winning a set amount each round. The more you’re willing to wager (see the next subsection), the higher your risk, but the higher your potential rewards too.

It’s also worth noting that mahjong moves more slowly than other table games. You’re not betting on rounds which can be over within a minute, as you might with blackjack, or even faster with games like roulette. Instead, you’re betting on the outcome of an entire game. At the very quickest, this will probably last 10 minutes, meaning patience and concentration are both key.

Minimum and Maximum Betting Limits

If you’re using mahjong slots, then you can set your own stake for each spin. There will be lower and upper limits for this, with the usual minimum being $0.10-0.20, and the maximum being anything from $40-100.

With regular mahjong, however, you’ll be buying into a round at a set value. This limit should be clearly displayed somewhere on the game’s page, and – obviously – it’s crucial that you check this before committing any money.

As a rule of thumb, if you’re just learning to play mahjong in casinos online you should stick to the lower stakes tables, regardless of your spending power. You can then move up gradually, if you so desire, as you become more comfortable.

Using Online Resources

One of the best things about playing mahjong online, rather than in-person, is that you have basically unlimited teaching resources available to you as you’re playing. You can have these open on a different tab on your browser, on your tablet beside you, or wherever else you please.

We’d definitely recommend having at least two pages open.

First, you want one showing you what all the tiles actually are. Remember to find one relating to your specific variant (more on that shortly).

Secondly, have a page telling you all the melds that you can make. As with a game like poker, you’ll learn these by heart over time. While you’re just starting out though, have a ‘cheat sheet’ open and refer to it constantly.

Playing Tournaments

You have two basic choices regarding how you play mahjong for real money.

The first is to simply go game-by-game. This is obviously the faster route, and the one we’d recommend to start with.

If you’re enjoying online mahjong, however, then you should look into playing tournaments instead. These involve playing multiple games within the same competition, and – ultimately – bigger winnings if you play well.

As with regular mahjong, different tournaments will have different buy-in amounts. The scoring will also have two different levels. Obviously you’ll calculate individual winners on a per-game basis, but you’ll also get points after each game depending on where you finished (1st-4th), and these will determine the eventual poistions in the tournament.

What Are Mahjong Slots?

As you will have noticed in our reviews section, at the top of this page, Malaysian casinos don’t actually tend to do very well when it comes to providing live mahjong games for their players. Where they perform much better, however, is with mahjong slots.

Mahjong slots – as the name suggests – are video slots with a mahjong theme. The symbols will often take the form of mahjong tiles, the background might be a mahjong table or a games hall, and so on. Mechanically, these obviously don’t feature mahjong gameplay. They can, however, still be a great substitute for big fans of mahjong games.

As you may also have noted earlier, some of the biggest developers in the industry – such as Play n Go, Asia Gaming, and Simple Play, have created some great mahjong slots. If you want to get a feel for how these games play, then Simple Play’s Saint of Mahjong – covered by both 1xBet and 12Play – is a great example.

Mahjong Slots vs. Live Mahjong

As you can probably guess, there’s a pretty big difference between mahjong slots and live mahjong. One (slots) is simply mahjong-themed, while the other involves playing the game itself. Both formats have plenty to offer, however.

If you want a more authentic and traditional experience, then try out live mahjong. This will obviously feature more interaction too, since you’re playing with – and competing against – real-life players.

If you want a much quicker-paced game, however, which still has a mahjong flavor, then play mahjong slots. You also get more choice over the stakes you use here, and far more options on the top Malaysian casinos.

How to Register at a Mahjong Malaysia Online Casino

Modern-day online casinos in Malaysia tend to be incredibly easy to use, even if you’ve never gambled online before. We’re pleased to say that this is definitely the case with our recommended casinos for Malaysia too. Here are the few straightforward steps you must take in order to begin playing for yourself.

Step 1 – Pick an Online Casino

With so many great options to choose from for playing mahjong online in Malaysia, this is arguably the toughest step of all. As noted, you can’t really go wrong with any of our 10 recommended brands. For the purposes of this guide, however, we’ll assume you simply went with our number one choice, 12Play.

Step 2 – Create Your Account

12play mahjong sign up

Bring up the home page of your chosen online casino, using either a computer or mobile app. Find the Register or Create Account button in the main menu, then click on it to begin the registration process. This will initially involve providing a series of personal details, such as your name, address and date of birth. After that, you’ll need to set the username and password for your account. Once all that’s done, just agree to the general terms and conditions and finish creating your account.

Step 3 – Make a Deposit

12play mahjong deposit screen

Before you can start playing mahjong, you obviously need some money to play with. Log in to your new account, using the details you just set, then find the Cashier or Deposit button, which is also usually in the main menu. Clicking it should bring up all of your deposit options. Pick one, enter the necessary payment information along with a monetary amount, then confirm your deposit.

Step 4 – Start Playing Mahjong

12play mahjong live casino

With your account both created and funded, it’s time to start actually playing some mahjong. Firstly, bring up either the regular or live casino section, depending on how you want to play. Then, find a mahjong game and load it up. Finally, just set your stake for that round, start playing, and continue to do so for as long as you please.

How We Rate the Best Online Casinos for Mahjong Players

There really are a whole lot of online casinos which are happy to accept Malaysian players, and a hefty portion of these also have mahjong games. Sorting through all of these is a time-consuming process, which is why we’ve gladly done the hard work for you. Aside from simply having mahjong games in place, here are four of the other key criteria we applied to the brands we evaluated.

🔍Special Offers

We wouldn’t necessarily recommend choosing a casino for playing mahjong online in Malaysia based on its promotions alone. That said, this should certainly be a factor in your thinking, since high quality deals really can make a difference to your profits.

That’s why we make it a priority to check out the selection of special offers provided by every brand we encounter. This evaluation doesn’t just look at the headline bonus amount, although this is important. We also delve into the terms and conditions, assessing the rollover requirements, time frames, and so on, in order to get a better overall picture of each promo’s value.

🔍Mobile Features

Malaysia is an extremely mobile-friendly country in general, and this will certainly apply to its betting public as well, including fans of mahjong. As such, any brand looking to target this market really should provide top quality mobile features.

Some casinos do this via downloadable mobile apps. Others rely instead on the mobile version of their main website. Either way, we researched whichever features were on offer for on-the-go mahjong players, evaluating the reliability, responsiveness, and usability of the tools.

🔍Player Safety

It can always feel like you’re taking a risk, when you sign up with a new online casino to play mahjong. Technically, you are entrusting that site with both your money and personal information, after all.

To ensure that risk is as low as possible, we’ve scrupulously assessed the player safety credentials for all the brands we looked at. The first thing we did was check that the online casino had at least one license with a regulatory body, such as PAGCOR. After that, we checked out its safety features, security certificates, track record, and current reputation among users and experts.

🔍Wider Game Selection

If you’re reading this article in the first place, you’re obviously a big fan of mahjong. We’re still guessing, however, that you like to dabble in other casino games from time to time. That’s why we made sure, during our investigation, to look not only at the mahjong games, but at each brand’s wider gaming selection.

There were two parts to this assessment. Firstly, we looked at the overall breadth of the selection, and simply saw the sheer volume of games which each brand offered. After that though, we also gauged the depth of the collection, when it comes to variants, and the developers involved.

As touched upon earlier, there isn’t one, sole game of mahjong out there. Like all popular casino games, the basic version of mahjong has spawned a whole range of variants, each of which has slightly different rules. Below, we’ve outlined three of the most popular versions of mahjong that you can try out.

Chinese Mahjong

chinese mahjong variant This is essentially the ‘classic’ version of the game. Despite much newer variants being out there though, this remains easily one of the most popular ones that you can play. It follows all the basic rules we laid out earlier (along with a few more nuanced ones, which you should check out before playing). It also happens to be the official version, so – if you fancy playing in a full online tournament one day – this is the variant to play.

Hong Kong Mahjong

This might not be the official version, but it’s arguably the most popular nowadays, particularly online. Also known as the Cantonese version, this one has slightly different scoring rules to regular, Chinese mahjong. Like the original though, it’s actually more accessible and easier to grasp than you might expect.

American Mahjong

American mahjong is easily the version with the most differences compared to the classic rule-set. One of the most important changes is the inclusion of eight ‘joker’ tiles, which basically count as any other symbol. Another is the famous ‘Charleston’, which is basically a tile-passing period, conducted at the start of each round, in which you can swap up to three of your tiles with another player. Visually, the tiles also look a little different to normal, but it’s the alternative rules you really need to be aware of.

Playing Mahjong Online for Free

Eventually, you obviously want to make money from playing mahjong online in Malaysia. One of the best ways to boost your chances, however, is to actually start off by playing without any money involved at all.

Playing free online mahjong is the ideal way to ease yourself into this classic game. While the rules are more straightforward than you might think, there’s definitely still an adjustment period as you acclimate to them, and get used to all the different tiles. By playing a free version of the game first, you can go through all of this with no risk attached. Then, when you’re definitely feeling comfortable, you can graduate to the real money version.

There are two main ways you can play free online mahjong.

The first is to use a dedicated website or app, of which there are many, as a quick search on Google or the App Store will show you. Arguably the more convenient approach, however, is to play for free on the casino you plan to use. For example, at 1xBet, players will have access to the slot demo for Mahjong JinPai and others. This allows you to get to know the rules of the game and gain an understanding of the possible payouts you can expect when you decide to play for real money.

Mahjong Odds & Payouts

Mahjong isn’t an entirely luck-based game, like roulette or baccarat. Luck certainly plays a role, in both the tiles you’re initially given and the ones you draw. There’s also a whole lot of decision-making here though, as you decide which tiles to keep and swap, which melds to go after, and so on. As such, we can’t tell you your actual ‘odds’ for winning a round, since your chances largely come down to how well you play.

Regarding your payouts for mahjong online in Malaysia, these will vary depending on both the variant you choose and the specific game you join as not every Mahjong payout table will be the same. Often, however, players will put down their stake at the beginning of a round, and the winner will claim the pot. Winners can sometimes get higher payouts than usual, if they end up with certain tiles.

Strategy & Tips for Mahjong Online

With some of the most popular casino games of all, like roulette or craps, there isn’t really any ‘strategy’ involved. With Mahjong, however, your decisions have a much greater impact on your long-term success. Below, we’ve provided some of the most important mahjong tips of all to help you on your way.

⭐Start Slowly

This is an important general tip for how you approach mahjong overall, as you’re just getting started. As discussed, we strongly recommend that you begin by playing mahjong completely for free, and only move on to the real money version when you’re genuinely comfortable with how the game works. Even then, however, we’d recommend taking things extremely slow. Pick a game with extremely low stakes to start with, and only look to ramp things up when your confidence with the game has grown.

⭐Leave the First Discard

Here we have a classic, basic strategy tip which all new mahjong players would do well to learn. Mahjong is both an attacking and defensive game. If you tip your hand too early (i.e. show what melds you’re going for), the other players can move against you. They might do so by either not discarding tiles that they know you want, or picking up tiles that you’d like for yourself. To help delay this for as long as possible, make sure you leave at least the first round of discarded tiles, and take face-down ones instead.

⭐Manage Information

Building on from our previous tip, one of the biggest elements of all when playing mahjong online in Malaysia is information management. As noted, a large part of this is trying not to reveal your in-game strategy to the other players. On the flip-side though, you also need to constantly be observing what the other players are doing. Check which tiles they’re discarding, and which discarded tiles they’re picking up, and make sure you don’t give them any extra help in their goals.

⭐Hold Early Pairs

If you get a pair early on in any of your mahjong online games, then sit on it, even if – in the short-term – it might seem better to discard one of those tiles. That early pair can form a great foundation for your future play, or even serve as your sole pair when it comes to the end of the game.

⭐Evaluate Your Position Late On

When players start selecting tiles from the last wall (the final area, basically) this signals that the round will be ending soon. As the endgame begins, you need to take stock and decide whether you’re going to play offensively or defensively. If you believe you have a genuine shot at winning outright, then continue playing attacking mahjong, and seek out high-scoring melds. If you think you’re already in the lead, or you’re not really sure, you might want to play defensively instead, and do your best to stop other players picking up late points.

Mahjong Casino Withdrawal Options

For the most part, Malaysian online casinos will offer the same options for withdrawals as they do for deposits. The only difference may be those supporting prepaid cards, like 1xBet, since these can’t be used for payouts.

Elsewhere, most Malaysian casinos don’t charge for withdrawals any more. This won’t always be the case though, and – if this is important to you – it’s something you must confirm yourself before signing up to any brand.

Finally, your payout speeds will vary significantly depending on the method you choose. Generally speaking, cryptos and eWallets payment options are the fastest, then debit cards, and bank transfers are the slowest.
